Why this course is for you
Ok, I’m going to jump right in and hit you with some statistics!
As of 2018, when the last lot of UK maternity data was collected, there is a 1 in 3 chance of a birthing person having a caesarean birth in Scotland. The figures are marginally better in England and Wales at a 1 in 4 chance.
With this in mind, it is so important that as a doula, that you are prepared for this.
If it’s a planned caesarean, there is still so much that you can do in your role as an advocate and birth supporter for your clients. I actually really like supporting planned caesareans now but I definitely felt way out of my comfort zone when I was supporting my first one.
If it’s an unplanned caesarean then your clients will be looking to you for support and to keep them calm. You can only do this if you feel knowledgeable and calm yourself.
There is a lot to understand about caesarean birth, not just from your client’s perspective, but also how it will affect you as a doula, physically and emotionally.
You also need to understand why the caesarean birth rate is so high and how to use this knowledge to prepare your clients and help them avoid any unnecessary surgery.
Ideally, nobody would need a caesarean birth, but it is required in some circumstances so you need to know this information so that you can help your clients make the choices that are right for them.

“After doing this course I feel much more confident in supporting my clients or their birth partners, should they need support during a caesarean. Carolyn was great throughout the course, she is so helpful and patient and explained anything I was unsure of. She is a natural at educating others“
